On Saturday 17 January 2026 at 20:30 CET, Nieuwe Noten presents a new edition of Composer’s Treat at the Plein Theater, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The Japanese composer Minami Nagai (1993) is the guest of honor, joining the versatile flutist Marieke Franssen for a special performance.
In addition, Franssen also performs pieces by other composers, including Yan Maresz’s Circumambulation (1993), Ruud Roelofsen’s Schimmenwereld for bass flute and live electronics (2024) (installation version), and Jacq Palinckx’s Maximal Music!. Another featured work is Rozalie Hirs’ article 8 [infinity] for flute and electronic sounds (2014), which was recorded by Franssen for Hirs’ portrait album Infinity Stairs (2025), also available on Spotify and other platforms (see below for the YouTube link).

Minami Nagai (Osaka, 1993) is a composer and pianist. After graduating in composition from Tokyo University of the Arts, she moved to Germany in 2022 and is completing her master’s degree at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich with Prof. Moritz Eggert. She won the highest prize at the 8th Tokyo International Art Song Composition Competition. Recent projects include the orchestral work The Peacock Spreading its Feathers with the New Japan Philharmonic (2024), the ballet umschlungen for the Munich Ballet Academy & Ensemble Oktopus (May 2025), and the new opera The Ship Finally Fell Asleep in Tokyo (June 2025).

Marieke Franssen studied flute at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Harrie Starreveld and at the International Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt. Marieke’s main focus is the contemporary repertoire, improvisation and the use of electronics. She regularly collaborates with composers, taking both their and her own ideas on flute playing to another level. She is interested in new ideas of presenting music to the audience and creating different ways of experiencing a concert. As member of the collective Frisse Oren she is involved in developing music theatre for children. With her foundation Stichting KNARS she (co)creates contemporary music (theatre) projects for museums and galleries. Marieke is a regular member of Doelen Ensemble (Rotterdam), Frisse Oren and Duo Leeghwater. As a guest, she regularly plays with Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt), Ensemble Modern Orchestra (Frankfurt), Asko|Schönberg (Amsterdam), Insomnio (Utrecht) and Ensemble Interface (Frankfurt).
