On Friday 15 October 2021 from 14:00 CET until 18:00 CET at the Aubette, Strasbourg, France, the architect Machiel Spaan and composer-poet Rozalie Hirs present their intermedial architectural music installation ways of space (2019), including several rounds of the installation at 14:30 CET, 15:30 CET, 16:30 CET, and 17:30 CET respectively. On Saturday 16 October 2021, the same program takes place, followed by a lecture and poetry reading by the artists.
The intermedial architectural sound installation ways of space (2019) by architect Machiel Spaan and composer Rozalie Hirs was developed in close collaboration during their artist-in-residence at Van Doesburg House, Meudon, France, from September through December 2019. The work is inspired by the concept of the “open floorplan” (Dutch: open plattegrond) Theo Van Doesburg (1883-1931) developed for his architectural work, including his own residence at rue Infroît, Meudon, France. In addition, the colors of Theo Van Doesburg and his De Stijl contemporaries inspired Hirs towards new musical harmonies. It is the third collaborative architectural sound art project by Spaan and Hirs, after Curvices (2013-present), and The Listening House (2017-present). The residency is supported by Mondriaanfonds, Theo Van Doesburg House, Stimuleringsfonds voor de Creatieve Industrie, and STEIM.
Curator and host of the event is Anke Vrijs. The location l’Aubette (1928) at Place Kléber, 67000 Strasbourg, France, can be reached by tram A, B, C, D, or F (arrêt Homme de Fer). The exhibition takes place in collaboration with Maison Européenne de l’Architecture & Association Theo van Doesburg.
