“New Music,” “avant-garde,” experimental,” “modern classical” — music that is tonal, atonal, beautiful, cacophonous, bafflingly complex, arrestingly simple, decidedly unpopular –whatever you may call it, Muddle Instead of Music is Louisville, KY’s home for cutting edge contemporary composition. Host Matt Ertz will play music by world-famous, recently-established, and still-emerging composers from all over the world.
The show is named after the famous 1936 article in Soviet newspaper Pravda, which officially denounced Dimitri Shostakovich’s modernist music as a dangerous weapon against society and the state. In that spirit, this show embraces the edginess, subversiveness, radical beauty and ugliness of this most underground of underground music.
