From January 18 to 31, 2017, the film maker Joost Rekveld is guest at the Film Festival, Rotterdam. During the festival, two retrospectives of his films will be shown twice, respectively Light Matters and Motors of Invention.
The first retrospective Light Matters includes the film #23.2/ Book of Mirrors (2001), for which Rozalie Hirs composed the music Book of Mirrors (2001). The music, performed by ASKO|Schönberg, and the film were commissioned by Holland Festival. The photo above shows a still from the film.
Inspired by concepts found in medieval and Renaissance optics, #23.2, Book of Mirrors was made with a set-up in which elementary optical principles are used to generate images. These are created by the interplay of light waves directly onto the emulsion and unconventional use of lenses, reproducing patterns of light outside of the camera.
The first retrospective Light Matters can be watched on January 28, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Pathé 2 and on January 31, 2017 at 9:45 pm at LantarenVenster 6.
